An antipdodean hat farewell mini-T (Dundee, 13/1/13)

Postby Nigel Cooper » Sun Dec 09, 2012 3:08 pm

Dundee Korfball Club would like to invite anyone and everyone who would like to play in a friendly little mini-tournament in Dundee on Sunday, January 13th, 2013.

The event will have a distinctly antipodean theme, as it will be a farewell celebration for two of our most favouritist players: Amy, who will soon be trundling of to her native NZ, and Steve G, who's off to Oz.

We're not really looking for complete teams to come and play competitively, just for as many people as we can get to have a bit of fun. Fancy dress may be required, and teams will be drawn from a (cork?) hat. There will be an entry fee of £5 per player to cover hall hire costs, etc.

Can anyone who would like join in the fun please get back to me (nigel@dundee.korfball.org.uk) asap - the sooner we know some approximate numbers, the sooner we can confirm a hall, and know how long we'll run for, etc.

I've had responses from Ed Uni & Glasgow now, so pretty sure that we'll get at least 30 people on the day. 3-hour hall booking confirmed from 1 to 4pm on Sunday, Jan 13, at the Douglas Sports Centre (DD4 8TG). Likely to make up at least 4 teams, so at least 6 games, and 80+ minutes playing time per person. Thanks for your support folks. :) :P

Numbers going up all the time, but too late to increase the amount of hall time available. Let's get everyone to the sports centre by 12:30 to do the draw (i.e. allocate people to teams), so that we can start the first game as soon as the hall is available. Schedules worked out for 4 teams (total of twelve 13-minute matches, at 14 min intervals) and 5 teams (ten 16-minute matches, at 17 min intervals). Venue is the Douglas Sports Centre on the eastern outskirts of Dundee (DD4 8TG): a nice big hall with plenty of seating at the side. Looking forward to it now...

A massive thank you to everyone (apart from Amy) that helped to make this event happen. As far as I could see, everything went as smoothly as could be expected, and everyone looked like they were having fun.
Biggest downers? Saying farewell to Amy (and, even in his absence, Steve Gilchrist). And also Lucie, for spraining her ankle - hope that it gets better soon, Lucie.
Biggest uppers? Getting so many people playing korfball. The turnout was brilliant (21 girls and 19 boys - who could as for anything more when you're trying to organise a hat tourny). And watching them all work together to make things run smoothly... it's no mean feat to squeeze 10 games in back to back without a single cock-up (apart from Lucie's ankle, that is). So thanks to everyone that made it happen.
Biggest thanks? To Amy, for being a star - she only started playing about a year ago, but she certainly made her mark, and is leaving behind many friends. Also to all the captains and the refs, who really got thrown in at the deep end, but did an excellent job. And finally to Mary, Steven, Alan, Terri, Michael, Ross and the rest of the Dundee mob for getting everything else (including me) organised.
And the biggest star of the day? Kyle Crombie, for his speed of action off the court (not that he was much worse on it) when Lucie sprained her ankle. In the space of time that it had taken me to get over to Lucie, who was playing on the same division, Kyle, who was sitting in the stands, was up on his feet and half way down the corridor to get some ice from the reception. Very impressive Kyle - you're a star!
Roll on next year? If anyone else is keen to do this all again, we are too. Only to play the mixed-up style of korfball though, not to see anyone else leaving us.
And for anyone that's interested, the winners were the Kangaroos, both on points and on age, and the beauty contest was a tie between the Kiwis, Kakapos, Quokkas and Crocodiles. The group photos are up now on the DKC web-site to prove it: https://picasaweb.google.com/1050158687 ... MiniT2013#
